Health care law allows consumers to easily find and compare options starting in 2014



Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius today announced a final rule that will make purchasing health coverage easier for consumers.  The policies outlined today will give consumers a consistent way to compare and enroll in health coverage in the individual and small group markets, while giving states and insurers more flexibility and freedom to implement the Affordable Care Act.

Social Security Independently Entitled Divorced Spouse's Benefits

These are benefits paid to divorced spouses of workers who are receiving (or are eligible to receive) Social Security benefits.
In order to qualify for this benefit program, you must meet the following requirements:
  • Be at least 62 years old and not currently married
  • Be divorced from a person who receives Social Security retirement or disability benefits
  • Have been married to that person for at least 10 years before the date the divorce became final
  • Not be getting a higher Social Security retirement benefit based on your own work.

HHS partners with Illinois on health insurance marketplace

 Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced that Illinois has been conditionally approved to operate a State Partnership Marketplace (Exchange), which will be ready for open enrollment in October 2013.

An alien may be eligible for SSI if he or she meets the requirements of the laws for non–citizens that went into effect on August 22, 1996. In general, beginning August 22, 1996, most aliens must meet two requirements to be potentially eligible for SSI:
1. Be in a qualified alien category; and
2. Meet a condition that allows qualified aliens to get SSI

IMPORTANT:An alien must also meet all of the other rules for SSI eligibility, including the limits onincome and resources, etc.

National Health Service Corps expands the primary care workforce


The National Health Service Corps awarded more than $10 million in funding for loan repayment to 87 medical students in 29 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, who will serve as primary care doctors and help strengthen the health care workforce, Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced today.

Millions of Americans newly eligible for quality, affordable health coverage in 2014

Because of the Affordable Care Act, millions of Americans will be newly eligible to receive quality, affordable health care through Medicaid and the new health insurance marketplaces (also known as the Exchanges) in 2014.  Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius today released a proposed rule that promotes consistent policies and processes for eligibility notices and appeals in Medicaid, the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), and Exchanges and give states more flexibility when operating their Medicaid programs. New designs to make health records easier for patients to use

Winning designs of printed health records to help patients better understand and use their electronic health records (EHRs) were announced today by Farzad Mostashari, M.D., the national coordinator for health information technology. The designs, created through a HHS Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) challenge contest, all met the goal of making EHRs valuable to patients and their family members. Read the Press Release >>
